Career decisions can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re choosing your first role, considering a shift into a new field, or wondering if it’s time to step into leadership, the weight of uncertainty can feel heavy. As believers, we long not only to succeed but also to walk in God’s will. So how do we discern His leading when the options are many?
1. Start with Prayer and Scripture
God’s Word is the foundation for discernment. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Begin by asking God to align your heart with His purposes. Prayer shifts the focus from “What do I want?” to “Lord, what do You want to do through me?”
2. Pay Attention to Your Gifts and Passions
God equips us uniquely. Think of David, whose skill with a sling prepared him for future battles, or Paul, whose training in the law prepared him to reason with both Jews and Gentiles. If you love problem-solving, perhaps God is calling you toward software engineering. If you come alive when mentoring others, leadership may be part of your path. Your skills and passions are often indicators of where God may want to use you.
3. Seek Wise Counsel
Discernment rarely happens in isolation. Trusted mentors, pastors, or colleagues can provide perspective you might not see. A young graduate once shared how he wasn’t sure whether to pursue teaching or IT. His pastor encouraged him to explore how he could use tech to educate others — and that became his calling in educational technology. God often confirms direction through the wisdom of others.
4. Notice the Doors God Opens (and Closes)
Sometimes discernment is about paying attention to circumstances. An opportunity may arise unexpectedly, or a role you hoped for may close. Rather than seeing closed doors as failures, view them as God’s redirection. Revelation 3:7 reminds us that Christ is the one “who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens.”
5. Move Forward in Faith
Discernment is rarely about waiting until every detail is clear. Often, God reveals the next step as we walk in obedience. Abraham set out without knowing his destination, trusting God would guide him. Likewise, we are called to take steps of faith, knowing that God directs those who trust Him.

Lord, I want my career to reflect Your purposes. Give me wisdom to hear Your voice, courage to follow Your leading, and peace to trust that You hold my future. Align my desires with Your will and use my work for Your glory. Amen.
